O'Brien hoping Witness can Star in July Cup

TRAINER Danny O'Brien is looking for Star Witness to sign off in style with his final run in the Darley July Cup at Newmarket on Saturday.

The Australian sprinter heads off for stud duties in his homeland after the race and has already proved himself of the highest calibre having placed second in the King's Stand Stakes and third in the Golden Jubilee at Royal Ascot.

O'Brien felt the ground had gone slightly against Star Witness by the time of the Golden Jubilee on the Saturday of the Royal meeting, but has no such qualms about Newmarket's goodground.

Speaking on Channel 4's Morning Line, he said: "The ground will be ideal. He's come out of Ascot well and I expect him to run well.

"He's tightened up nicely and worked lovely on the July Course on Tuesday. We'll probably hold him up a bit longer than we did in the Jubilee."

With favourite Delegator on the drift - as big as 5-1 with William Hill - Star Witness could soon be challenging the market leader at a general 6-1.

NEWMARKET, the home of racing, where thousands of thoroughbreds are led through the streets to communal gallops on a daily basis, hosts the always-popular July festival at the height of summer.

Set in the intimate, by festival standards, surroundings of Newmarket's July course, it features three days of international-class racing and is a social fixture whose influence radiates far beyond the tight-knit Newmarket community.

While racegoers in their finery sip champagne in the shadow of the grandstand the racecourse plays host to many of the nation's finest horses in top-class races such as the Falmouth Stakes and July Cup.

The latter, an exhilarating six-furlong sprint, is one of the season's more exotic offerings, often welcoming international sprinters from Europe, South Africa and Australia.
